A recent survey of more than 100 doctors conducted by Salaried Doctors
Queensland (SDQ) revealed the following statistics:
- 88% of doctors have experienced dangerous levels of fatigue
while working
- 59% of doctors have made mistakes performing procedures
while fatigued
- 80% of doctors have made mistakes in prescribing medications
while fatigued
- 87% of doctors said they often have no choice but to continue
working while fatigued
The public hospital doctors had the following to say on how fatigue affected them
- "Have prescribed wrong dose of morphine (10x what was actually needed and this was
given to patient). Luckily patient was already ventilated!"
- “Writing in the wrong patients chart. Admitting a patient twice because I couldn't
remember the first admission. Unable to recall admitting a patient the night before.”
- "I was driving home and completely missed out a section of the trip in my memory -
I think I had a microsleep episode. I was incredibly exhausted at the time."
